Private Practice or In-House? Choosing the right path for you.

The number of Solicitors working in-house is growing at a faster rate than those in private practice and is predicted to reach 35 per cent of the profession by 2020, reports the Law Society. Working in-house is distinctly different to working in a private practice law firm or the public sector. Both law firms and in-house positions have their perks and drawbacks. The trick is to determine where you, your skills and your lifestyle requirements feel most comfortable. So maybe it’s the 80-hour week that’s just too much and you’ve reached burnout, or you are fed up of the endless paperwork that accompanies billing in six-minute increments - is the prospect of moving in-house looking more and more alluring each day? Or is in-house your career choice?

The In-House Difference

Working in-house can be significantly different than working at a law firm. First of all, in-house Lawyers have only one client - the company they work for and since your sole client pays your salary, you don't have to worry about billable hours.

A common perception is that in-house Lawyers don't have to work late nights or on weekends. This is partly true, since in-house Lawyers only have to meet the demands of one client. So, if the company you work for is running smoothly, you may not wind up working the crazy hours that private practice can demand. You may take a drop in salary, but you will have more personal time and control over your working hours and be able to capitalise on flexible working arrangements and a more balanced life.

What do I need to have to be an in-house Lawyer?

A commercial outlook is key. Depending on the type of in-house role you may need to have a demonstrable track record of developing business. Able to think on your feet, have well developed soft skills and be a superb communicator, able to engage with a wide range of people. Coaching and coordinating can often come with the territory, so you need to be organised, efficient and driven. In essence many of the skills you already have as a private practice Lawyer.
